T-SCAN Diagnostics of the Occlusion

Occlusion means the joining of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws during functional contact. Often the cause of serious dental diseases is occlusion dysfunction, or an abnormal occlusion. Uneven load on the teeth can lead to damage to the enamel, premature destruction of fillings and crowns, atrophy of periodontal tissues, diseases of the temporomandibular joint, etc. In modern dentistry, there is the most accurate method for studying contact during the occlusion of teeth. It is about T-SCAN diagnostics. This technique was introduced by Tekscan in 1987. Since then, this type of research has been actively used in various fields of dentistry: in implantology, therapeutic dentistry, orthodontics, orthopaedics, and in the treatment of TMJ. T-SCAN diagnostics allows the dentist to accurately determine the force of compression of teeth (bite) using special disposable sensors, including the study of dynamic occlusion.

T-SCAN diagnostics: useful information for patients

Abnormal occlusion can occur after the restoration of teeth, as crowns and even fillings, or more complex structures (removable prostheses and bridge works) partially raise the bite, thereby provoking discomfort and the occurrence of other dental diseases. In order to detect the contact during the occlusion, previously such means as copying paper, wax, and analysis of the jaw models in the articulator were used. Some of these methods are still relevant, but waxes and sprays, markers and articulation paper allow only contact points to be established, which are then written by the dentist. Digital T-SCAN diagnostics of the occlusion provides the most complete information that minimizes the risk of complications (for example, the uneven distribution of the load on the teeth during the chewing movements).

T-SCAN diagnostics of occlusion: what is the essence of this method?

To perform the necessary research, the patient needs only to bite a special individual sensor plate, with the help of which accurate indicators and various micro-deviations are displayed on the monitor. The data is stored in digital form, which allows the doctor to see the dynamics of changes in the nature of the closing of the teeth, the distribution of the load on the teeth and a lot of other important information before and after treatment. Thus, a specialist can perform any dental procedures (tooth fillings, prosthetics or implantation, etc.), quickly identifying all problem points. If not to reveal the wrong contacts during closing the teeth in time, traumatic occlusion will occur.

Clinical symptoms of traumatic occlusion

  • changes in the position of the teeth;
  • teeth mobility;
  • the appearance of cracks on the enamel and darkening of the tooth surface;
  • atrophy of periodontal tissues and gum recession (or “loss” of the gums);
  • deformation of fillings and crowns (chipped ceramics), their premature destruction;
  • impaired stability and durability of implants;
  • development of diseases of the temporomandibular joint;
  • traumatic occlusion can provoke frequent migraines.

Diagnostics of T-SCAN occlusion: information for fellow dentists

Correction of occlusion is a paramount stage in the modern approach to the rehabilitation of patients after the treatment of TMJ dysfunction. In this case, it is important to carry out the most accurate measurement of occlusal load, to analyse the direction of jaw displacement during closure, to determine the location of contacts on the surface of the teeth: all these indicators are necessary for effective treatment. The use of the T-SCAN technique allows simultaneous investigation of static and dynamic load and analysis over time and across the sectors of the formed occlusal surfaces.

Advantages of T-SCAN diagnostics of occlusion for specialists

  • high quality and accuracy of the data;
  • an opportunity to carry out effective and high-quality treatment, within shorter time than using less precise traditional methods;
  • providing comfort to the patient after installing temporary and permanent structures;
  • reducing the risk of dental implants failure, chipped ceramics and other deformations;
  • improving bite splints efficiency;
  • reduction of psychological and emotional discomfort, and additional motivation for patients not to neglect the treatment of serious dental diseases.
